The Alzheimer's Association projects that by 2025, there will be an estimated 7.1 million people age 65 and older with Alzheimer's disease - a 40% increase from the 5.1 million age 65 and older affected in 2015.
Library staff need to ask themselves: 1) How does this increasing demographic affect our library and community? 2) How do we serve this growing population? Tina Williams, Outreach Services Manager, White Oak Library District and David Kelsey, Outreach Services Librarian, St. Charles Public Library, will share information from the Alzheimer's Association to give an overview of the impact of Alzheimer's and dementia related illnesses. Tina and David will discuss efforts to serve patrons with dementia in their communities. She worked 2 years in a medical library as a night manager too. Tina has a Bachelor of Science in Computer Information Systems from DeVry University and a Masters of Library Science from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Tina is the co-founder and co-chair of the Reaching Across Illinois Library System (RAILS) Serving Patrons with Dementia Group as well as the founder and chair of the Pinnacle Consortium Outreach Committee.
David J. Kelsey is the Outreach Services Librarian at St. Charles Public Library in St. Charles, IL. David is a 2016-2017 ABOS Board Member-at-Large and is Chair of the Awards and Scholarships Committee. David is the co-founder and co-chair of the Reaching Across Illinois Library System (RAILS) Serving Patrons with Dementia Group as well as the founder and chair of the Library Integrated Network Consortium (LINC) Outreach Task Force.
