Updated Cataloging Guidance Documents Now Available

RAILS has updated two key cataloging guidance documents developed by the Cataloging Working Group in collaboration with cataloging staff from all Local Library System Automated Programs (LLSAPs). As part of the revision process, the RAILS Cataloging Services staff reviewed the existing documents, gathered feedback from LLSAP cataloging staff, and updated the recommendations to reflect current cataloging practices and community input.

Best Practices for Consortial Cataloging

The Best Practices for Consortial Cataloging document helps RAILS libraries and consortia strengthen existing cataloging standards and develop consistent practices in areas where standards may not yet exist. The recommendations establish a baseline for bibliographic description, promote consistency within and across consortia, and address key cataloging issues that enhance the patron experience.

Cataloging Staff Competency Levels

The Cataloging Staff Competency Levels document provides recommended competency levels for cataloging staff. These guidelines can help libraries develop training programs, support professional development, and plan for cataloging positions. The recommendations are designed to be flexible and can be adapted to local workflows, staffing structures, and organizational needs.

We encourage RAILS member libraries to review these updated resources and consider incorporating them into local cataloging practices and staff development efforts.
