Highlight from Our World Language Cataloging Services Program: A Khmer Journey Through Tom Sawyer

RAILS World Language Cataloging Services Program is committed to enriching library collections with global perspectives, one title at a time. Among our recent projects, one stood out as an exciting intersection of literary heritage and linguistic diversity: the cataloging of a Khmer translation of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer for Northern Illinois University (NIU) Libraries.

This remarkable edition, rendered in the official language of Cambodia, brings Mark Twain’s classic story to life for Khmer-speaking readers and scholars. It represents a bridge between cultures and a testament to the power of translation in making iconic literature accessible across linguistic boundaries.

As part of our ongoing efforts, we’ve cataloged numerous Khmer titles, but this translation is a highlight, reflecting both the global reach of American literature and the growing need for multilingual access in academic libraries.

We’re proud to support NIU Libraries in expanding their multilingual holdings and to contribute to a more inclusive, representative catalog for students, researchers, and readers around the world.

Stay tuned for more features as we continue to spotlight unique titles and hidden gems from the world’s rich tapestry of languages.
