Bookmobile & Outreach Assistant

Job Summary

The Bookmobile & Outreach Assistant plays a vital role in extending the library’s services beyond its physical walls. Under the supervision of the Deputy Director, this position represents the library in the community through bookmobile operations, outreach programming, and home delivery services. Responsibilities include driving and maintaining the bookmobile, delivering materials to scheduled stops, and engaging with patrons of all ages through outreach. This role also involves leading story times at daycare centers and organizing interactive activities with senior citizens to promote literacy, engagement, and lifelong learning.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate and maintain the bookmobile vehicle, including daily safety inspections and interior/exterior cleanliness (including snow removal).
  • Deliver materials to bookmobile stops, assisted living facilities, and homebound patrons.
  • Lead story times for daycares and conduct programming or activities for senior citizens.
  • Provide excellent customer service and readers’ advisory for patrons of all ages.
  • Process circulation transactions using the SWAN system (library cards, checkouts, returns, holds).
  • Collect fines and fees as appropriate.
  • Manage the mobile collection, including inventory rotation, shelving, weeding, and shelf maintenance.
  • Support programming and outreach events in the community.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve patron service issues in a professional manner.
  • Communicate effectively in person, via phone, and electronically.
  • Maintain awareness of public safety concerns and report them to supervisors or appropriate authorities.
  • Respect and maintain confidentiality of patron records and library use.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
     

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Skills & Abilities:

  • Comfortable engaging with children, seniors, and diverse community groups
  • Ability to follow routes and maps accurately
  • Capable of lifting, pushing, or pulling up to 45lbs in a variety of weather conditions
  • Reliable, detail-oriented, and able to manage multiple tasks
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Technologically adaptable with basic computer and math skills
  • Able to work independently and as part of a tea
  • Weekend availability required during select times of year
