Under the general supervision of the Adult & Teen Services Librarian, Public Service Associate is a part-time position with 28 regularly scheduled hours per week, including evenings and Saturdays, plus filling in as relief for staff vacation and sick leave. This position will primarily assist with staffing the computer lab and reference desks, and may be asked to assist in any department based on operational needs.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Public Service Responsibilities
- Assists patrons with logging onto and using library computers and devices, including scanning and printing documents.
- Assists patrons with basic computer and technology related questions, including access to library resources such as databases, websites, and apps.
- Assists patrons with the copy machine, fax machine, and public access computers
- Work alongside the IT Coordinator and Adult & Teen Services Librarian on the development and implementation of public programs, including computer and technology classes and one-on-one technology appointments for patrons, staff, and Trustees.
- Assists the Adult & Teen Services Librarian with special projects as needed.
Office Responsibilities
- Greets and directs guests in the library
- Answers the phone
- Sends faxes, making copies, and uses various office equipment
- Adds paper and toner to printers, copiers, and fax machine
- Monitors computer use and public areas
- Maintains a welcoming and orderly library
General Responsibilities
- Provides consistent, gracious, and friendly service to coworkers and patrons.
- Understands and enforces library policies and procedures while safeguarding confidential and restricted information.
- Participates in coverage of the Circulation, Reference or Computer Lab desks as needed.
- Assists with library public programs and outreach.
- Participates in professional development and networking activities both online and in person.
- Acts as Person-In-Charge (PIC) of the building when necessary.
- Includes evenings, weekends, and some mandatory workdays.
And other duties as assigned by the Library Director.
REQUIREMENTS FOR THIS POSITION
- Ability to work accurately in a changing and varied environment across multiple departments and with frequent interruptions.
- Flexible, self-motivated, and must effectively communicate and work well with patrons and fellow staff members and possess a positive attitude.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
- Associates Degree or one (1) year of public library (or equivalent) experience required.
- Proficiency with a variety of technology including Windows and IOS platforms, Microsoft Office, and mobile devices.
- Alphabetical and number sequence test required.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Positions self to maintain computers in the lab, shelve books and pull books from shelves.
- May move book carts up to 100 pounds.
