Interesting Items from RAILS World Language Cataloging Service

At the World Language Cataloging Service, our mission is to expand access to the many languages spoken and read in Illinois libraries. Juvenile materials make up a large portion of the requests we receive, and are some of the most interesting materials to work with. We receive cataloging requests for a variety of juvenile materials, including board books, picture books, pop-ups, and graphic novels. When working with these items, it is easy to get distracted by the many unique art styles, formats, and stories they contain!

Below are some of our favorite finds :

행복한 말똥구리 (Haengbokhan malttongguri) by 글 이 다영 (Ta-yŏng Yi) ; illustrated by 그림 솜이 (Somi)

The Happy Tumblebug, written by Ta-yŏng Yi, illustrated by Somi, is a Korean book that tells of an unlikely friendship between a horse and a dung beetle. It contains fun cartoons, detailed watercolors, and a silly but heartfelt story. This book was sent to us by Oak Park Public Library.

Quijote y yo  : a nosotras no nos gusta nada by Constanza Ontaneda

This bilingual series, written in both English and Spanish, follows the misadventures of Don Quijote and his niece, Antonia. These books are designed to introduce young readers to a new language, featuring a glossary to help them navigate the text. This item comes from East Moline Public Library.

อสุรกายใต้เตียง (ʻAsurakāi tāi tīang) by Jeanne Willis, illustrated by Susan Varley, translated by จีนน์ วิลลิส (ʻAksō̜nsāt Sīrư̄an)

This Thai text is a translation of The Monster Bed, a 1987 children’s book by Jeanne Willis, with illustrations by Susan Varley. A young monster named Dennis is terrified that there may be people hiding under his bed. This book is intended to help young readers tackle their nighttime fears of monsters lurking in the dark. We received this request from Northern Illinois University.
