Illinois Heartland Library System (IHLS) recently published an FAQ for schools regarding Public Act 103-0100 on book bans. This legislation is designed to protect Illinois libraries' freedom to acquire materials and Illinoisans' freedom to read.

This law mandates that every Illinois library receiving state grants must establish an anti-censorship policy. Specifically, it says that those libraries will only be eligible for State grants if they either "adopt the American Library Association's Library Bill of Rights" or "develop a written statement prohibiting the practice of banning books or other materials within the library or library system."

Check out more information about PA 103-0100 on IHLS's website including an explanation of the law, how the law might affect a library's membership in a library system, what is considered a violation of this law, who to contact for assistance, and much more.
