Bookmobile Clerk

Position Summary: The Bookmobile Clerk represents the library throughout the community and assists in the operation of the bookmobile. This position facilitates the delivery of library materials and services to designated stops and participates in daily circulation activities for patrons of all ages. The Bookmobile Clerk assists with routine vehicle checks and supports off-site collection management, including lobby stops, and assisted living facilities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Circulation and Patron Services

  • Check library materials in and out using the automated circulation system (SWAN).
  • Create library accounts and manage holds and other patron records.
  • Collect fines and fees as appropriate.
  • Provide readers’ advisory services to patrons of all ages.
  • Deliver story time and assist with outreach programming as needed.
  • Provide excellent customer service in person, by phone, and electronically.
  • Troubleshoot customer service issues and negotiate solutions when possible.
  • Respect and maintain confidentiality of library users and records.
  • Count and track daily circulation statistics, including materials distributed and returned.
  • Make copies and provide basic clerical assistance as needed.

 

Collection Management

  • Assist with rotation of bookmobile inventory.
  • Shelve materials according to library procedures.
  • Perform shelf maintenance and weeding of the collection.
  • Maintain organization and accessibility of materials within limited space.

 

Bookmobile Support and Maintenance

  • Keep the bookmobile interior clean, orderly, and welcoming.
  • Maintain cleanliness of the exterior, including snow removal when necessary.
  • Assist with basic daily vehicle inspection as directed.
  • Ensure the bookmobile is properly plugged in and unplugged when required.
  • Report any safety or maintenance concerns to supervisors promptly.

 

Community Engagement and Safety

  • Promote library services and represent the library positively in the community.
  • Recognize and respond appropriately to the diverse needs of patrons.
  • Report public safety issues or concerns to supervisors, administration, police, or proper authorities when necessary.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

 

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

 

Ability to:

  • Promote the services and mission of the library effectively.
  • Read, follow, and understand maps and routes.
  • Understand basic mechanical systems of the bookmobile.
  • Shelve and retrieve materials in confined spaces.
  • Travel daily and assist with loading and unloading materials in various weather conditions.
  • Follow established library procedures.
  • Communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing.
  • Provide friendly, high-quality customer service.
  • Manage multiple and unexpected tasks simultaneously.
  • Create a courteous and welcoming first impression of the library.
  • Perform basic math calculations.
  • Adapt to new technologies and systems.
  • Maintain positive working relationships with coworkers.
  • Follow oral and written instructions accurately and systematically.
  • Ability to lift and carry 30lbs regularly and up to 45lbs occasionally with assistance.
  • Work weekends as required, particularly during summer months.
  • Bookmobile Clerk is required to posses a valid drivers license to assist with driving the Bookmobile when needed.

     

Knowledge of:

  • Popular library materials for all age groups.
  • English grammar, spelling, and vocabulary.
  • Libraries and the Dewey Decimal Classification System.
  • Basic office equipment.
  • Computer literacy, including email, search engines, and basic Windows functions.
