Lake Villa District Library’s “Great Lawn” is Ready for Visitors

Hobbit-inspired berm built into a landscaped hill, featuring a round green door set in a brick-and-stone façade, with a curved roof, small windows, and a patio area with log seating in front, surrounded by grass and leafless trees.

At long last, Phase II of Lake Villa District Library's Outdoor Space Plan is complete. While the official grand opening will be held on Sunday, June 7, visitors are welcome to explore the space now. Enter at the Book Arbor and follow the path.

“Phase II of the plan includes multiple projects,” said Library Director Mick Jacobsen. “The Great Lawn, an outdoor reading room, three shaded patios, a performance pavilion, a walking path, a Monarch Butterfly Wayfinding Station, and a whimsical berm designed as a Hobbit-inspired house.”

Developing LVDL’s outdoor space became a key focus for the Library Board after community surveys and focus groups highlighted its importance during the 2021 strategic planning process. Hitchcock Design Group—now RVI—was hired to create a comprehensive landscape plan to be implemented over several years. The first phase, completed in 2024, added seating, shade, and beautification to the library’s main entrance.

Jacobsen is looking forward to officially opening the new space. “I hope the community will enjoy it for years to come.”

All are welcome to attend the grand opening on Sunday, June 7. The ribbon-cutting ceremony will begin at 1 p.m., followed by a performance by the Lakes Community High School Jazz Ensemble. Light refreshments will be served.
