Helen Plum Library is announcing the Grand Opening of its new facility at 411 S. Main Street. Grand Opening celebrations will be held on Saturday, April 22 from 9am to 4pm, and Sunday, April 23 from 1pm to 4:30pm. A detailed schedule of events can be found on the Library's website.
Library administration identified the need for a new building as far back as 1999, and a successful referendum was passed in 2016. It was announced on March 13, 2023 that the old property at 110 W. Maple Street will be acquired by the Lombard Park District. Information about the Maple Street properties, including a recordation of the history of the Library at 110 W. Maple, can be found on the Library’s website at helenplum.org/library-history.
At long last, the public will be able to step through the new Library’s doors and explore the building for themselves. The 50,000-square-foot, two-story building welcomes visitors with floor-to-ceiling windows, programs and spaces for all ages, new technologies, and plenty of cozy places to sit and read. The Library will open to the public at 9am on Saturday, April 22 with celebrations including giveaways and activities for all ages.
Children can participate in activities in the Youth Services Department or play in the Robin’s Nest early literacy area. Teens can play video games in a brand-new space designed specifically for them. Adults can get a preview of the new makerspace, Studio 411, with sample projects on display, made using the Library’s new 3D printers and other crafting equipment. Throughout the Grand Opening weekend, visitors of all ages can explore the Library’s new spaces by participating in a scavenger hunt. Cardholders who complete the scavenger hunt will be entered to win a prize.
Throughout the weekend, visitors can also enjoy giveaways and small bites from local Lombard restaurants including Righteous Kitchen, Gnarly Knots, Rainbow Cone, Lilac Bakery, and The Donut Experiment. Giveaway items and refreshments will be available first come, first served and while supplies last.
