Oak Lawn Hometown Middle School_3D Printed Hand

This school library site visit was a special one—a group of eighth graders gave us the tour!

They introduced us to Beans, the library’s beloved bearded dragon, told us about how they 3D-printed a working hand for an amputee, and expressed just how much they love to spend time with their school librarian.

Appreciation for OLHMS school librarian Heather McCarthy extends beyond her students. McCarthy was named a 2024 Mover & Shaker by the Library Journal, officially recognizing her as a change agent in the library community.

McCarthy not only exposes her students to different perspectives through reading, but through her own travel stories. These personal narratives inspire students to take action and help communities outside of their own. Most recently, they helped organize a 6K Walk for Literacy to raise money to build a library in Zimbabwe.

Great things happen when students have access to a dedicated librarian, and the world can see it through the students at OLHMS.
